Fishing has over 800 years of tradition in Warnemünde. The small village at the mouth of river Warnow (that is what the name Warnemünde means) was first mentioned in 1195, and the Danish record called it a fishing village even back then.
Today, the town is most prominently known as Germany's largest cruise ship harbor, but the "Old Canal" (Alter Strom in German), which used to be the original river mouth has not changed in eight centuries and is still home to a fleet of fishing boats, going after the treasures of the Baltic Sea: cod, herring, flounder and eel.
Adjacent to the harbor are several smoke houses and according to old Warnemünde tradition, there is only one way to enjoy cod fish: You have to catch it yourself, smoke it yourself and eat it yourself - while it is still hot.
