The equestrian statue erected to the glory of the sun king, Louis XIV, bearing the scepter at arm's length, insignia of his royalty and his power. The forehead girded with laurels adds to the majesty of the work. A flamboyant sculpture!
The King had two sculptors, Pierre Mazeline (1632-1708) and Simon Hurtrelle (1648-1724), to make the statue, following a drawing by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, First architect of the king. After the six months of transport from the Mazeline workshops in Paris to Montpellier, it was still necessary to wait for the pedestal to be built, and it was not until February 27, 1718, thirty-three years after the decision to endow the promenade Royal of an equestrian statue, that the inauguration took place with great pomp. New avatar: the statue was melted during the Revolution to serve as cannonballs and a guillotine took its place!
In 1814, the General Council voted to create a new statue (but half the size of the previous one). The Parisian founder Carbonneau finished it in 1831 according to a drawing by Jean-Baptiste de Bay. After 25 days of travel, the statue arrived on Tuesday 5 August 1838 in Montpellier, having left the Parisian workshops on 14 July.
