story
The first written mention of a parish church ("ecciesia in brisiaco") dates from 1041. Patronate law had the monastery of St. Florin in Koblenz. In a treaty dated July 26, 1311, the archbishop of Cologne, Heinrich II, stated that the right of patronage to "Brische" was to be exercised jointly by Koblenzer Florinsstift and the Essener Stift.
For the first time in 1337 a chapel in Niederbreisig was mentioned, dedicated to St. Nicholas and St. Sebastian. It was the branch chapel of St. Viktor (Oberbreisig). The parish church of St. Viktor belonged to the parish of Breisig, a church of the Order of St. John.
The Essenian prince-baptist Anna Salome of Salm-Reifferscheidt, landlady of the Breisiger Ländchen, laid the foundation stone for the construction of today's tower on May 18, 1654, but it was only completed in 1718. In the years 1718 to 1725, the local community built a choir and a longhouse. The new Gotteshaus was consecrated on 6th October 1727 by the Cologne auxiliary bishop Maria. In 1786 Niederbreisig was raised to an independent parish.
In the 1880s, the Baroque building undergone a change when the windows were covered with colorful glass and the middle Chorfenster was walled. On September 20, 1944 St. Marien suffered a war; But the interior was preserved. In the course of the renovations, the windows were restored in their original shape and with bright glass. A comprehensive renovation was completed in 2011.
Building Description
Like the predecessor, today's Hallenkirche is not exhausted, but due to the cramped conditions in the old town center aligned to the southeast. As an architect Philipp Honorius Ravensteyn, the Trier court architect, was accepted.
The single-nave baroque hall building is a five-storey building with a 5/8 choir section. The gothic shape of the church is characterized by gothic forms: the outside of the wreath of buttresses, the vault with cross ribs and the end stones, the arches of which are supported by cranked pilasters. Large round-arched windows allow enough light to enter the interior.
The landmark of Niederbreisig is the prominent bell tower on the north side. It has a square floor plan and also serves as an entrance. The baroque pilaster portal has a curving gable and carries the year 1718 in the door lintel. The gate hall is provided with a cross vault. A double hood with an open lantern closes the tower, in which hang three bells, the oldest being poured in 1400.
Since 1977, on the western side, an extension has been built, which is connected to the long house by two large arches.
equipment
The interior of the interior is almost completely preserved from the baroque period. Among the wooden furnishing items are dark brown tones with gilding.
The three-sided chancel is dominated by the high altar and the two smaller side altars, all of which date from the first half of the 18th century. The main altar has three levels. Above the tabernacle, the Ascension of Mary is depicted as a sculpture in the center, and a revelation of the Trinity, supplemented in 1924. The central figure of the Virgin is flanked on the left by Peter, an angel and a figure with Monstranz (1924), to the right of Augustine (1924), an angel and Paul. The side altars show the two saints to whom the predecessor was dedicated: St. Nicholas and the St. Sebastian. On the great painting of the left altar, Maria Immaculata can be seen, about it Nicholas with children, on the right altar Sebastian as a martyr.
entrance door
The functional wooden entrance doors are divided, top with round arch. The door itself is decorated with square patterns.
