The Marzocco lion is an heraldic lion which is the animal symbol representing the free Republic of Florence. A Maraoco lion is seated with one paw on a shield. The Florentine Republic chose the symbol of the lion over other animals because lions are able to tear apart the eagle, which is the symbol of imperial power.
The name Marzocco is thought to derive from the word Marte (Mars). A Roman statue of Mars was once the symbol of Florence. According to Dante, it was destroyed by the flooding of the Arno River in 1333.
