This medieval fort is located in downtown Caen, France. Built in 1060 by William the Conqueror. Later additions included a keep built in 1123, a hall for ducal court and Saint George's Church.
The fort has seen a lot of action over the years including the Hundred Years war on 3 sperate occasions. The castle's keep was torn down in 1793 during the French Revolution and in World War II the fort was heavily damaged while being used as a barracks for troops.
In 1971 the Musee des Beaux-Arts (Museum of Fine Arts of Caen) was opened and a Museum of Normandy has since opened.
