South Mountain Park is the largest city park in the country. It is in the Sonoran desert and crisscrossed with excellent hiking trails. The Pyramid trail starts on the south side of the park and climbs 1400 feet to a summit overlooking the Phoenix metro area. This is a six mile out and back trail. The trailhead is located just off the eastern end of Chandler Blvd. and parking is available. The only facilities available are the two garbage cans. There is no shade on the trail and hikers need be aware of the usual desert threats, most everything on the trail wants to bite or sting.
