De l'Hôtel des Cens à l'Hôtel de Ville
L'Hôtel des Cens (impôt sous l'ancien régime) appartient au Moyen-Age à l'abbaye de Saint-Denis. A la fin du XVème siècle, il est vendu à Jehan Regnault, riche bourgeois apparenté à Jacques Amyot. Les religieuses de la Madeleine de Trainel (Aube) l'achètent à leur tour en 1629, et y installent une chapelle. Maître Jean Riotte, Conseiller du Roi, s'en rend acquéreur en 1652 et en fait à nouveau une demeure luxueuse. L'hôtel sert d'abri au duc de Choiseul-Praslin pendant la Révolution. La Ville de Melun achète l'hôtel des Cens en 1837.
Une nouvelle architecture
L’actuel Hôtel de Ville, combinant des styles néo-classique et néo-Renaissance, est construit entre 1846-1848 sur les plans de l’architecte Jean-Jacques Gilson. Deux bâtiments sont rasés, à l'exception de la tourelle de l'Hôtel des Cens qui conduit actuellement aux bureaux, et fait édifier la tourelle de gauche en 1847-1848. C’est en 1882, dans la cour de l’Hôtel de Ville que Louis Pasteur confirme l’expérience publique sur la vaccination charbonneuse menée sur cinquante moutons à la ferme de Pouilly-le-Fort. Une plaque commémore cet événement sur la façade nord de l'Hôtel de Ville.

From the Hotel des Cens to the Town Hall
The Hôtel des Cens (tax under the old regime) belongs to the Middle Ages to the abbey of Saint-Denis. At the end of the 15th century, it was sold to Jehan Regnault, a rich bourgeois who was related to Jacques Amyot. The nuns of the Madeleine de Trainel (Aube) bought it in 1629, and installed a chapel there. Maître Jean Riotte, Advisor to the King, bought it in 1652 and made it again a luxurious residence. The hotel serves as a shelter for the Duke of Choiseul-Praslin during the Revolution. The City of Melun buys the Hotel des Cens in 1837.
A new architecture
The present Town Hall, combining neo-classical and neo-Renaissance styles, was built between 1846-1848 on the plans of the architect Jean-Jacques Gilson. Two buildings were razed to the ground, except for the turret of the Hotel des Cens, which now leads to the offices, and built the turret on the left in 1847-1848. It was in 1882, in the courtyard of the Hôtel de Ville, that Louis Pasteur confirmed the public experiment on anthrax vaccination carried out on fifty sheep at the Pouilly-le-Fort farm. A plaque commemorates this event on the northern façade of the Town Hall.
