Ashland Cemetery is the community's premier pioneer cemetery where numerous individuals who settled in the Rogue Valley during the mid-1800s are interred. The most famous plot within the cemetery is that of Lindsey Applegate and many of his family members. Although Lindsey Applegate's gravestone is a small and simple granite headstone, his wife Elizabeth's is a tall and ornate zinc headstone.
The front of the zinc headstone reads:
SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF
ELIZABETH,
WIFE OF
LINDSEY APPLEGATE,
BORN SEPT. 27, 1816, DIED JULY 6, 1882.
PEACEFUL BE THY REST, DEAR MOTHER
The other sides of the monument are embellished with Christian symbols. This is the largest and most ornate of all the zinc headstones located here.
