"During the 2012-2013 academic year the Scholars partnered with Safe Streets and the City of Binghamton to build a park on the West Side of Binghamton. Prior to the renovations the scholars performed, this area was an empty lot where kids would hang around late at night and cause drug problems within the community. The Scholars, Safe Streets and the City of Binghamton wanted to solve this problem by creating The Walnut Street Park, which would be completed by raising over $21,000...The Community Service Day is where the Walnut Street Park became a reality. It occurred in April of 2013, many Scholars came to the park to get this work done. The day consisted of installing playground equipment previously purchased from our fundraising efforts, as well as painting a mural on a building across the street. In addition to the playground equipment, the Scholars also cleaned two vacant adjacent lots and planted a garden...The Scholars also hosted a celebration at the Park after their Community Service Day. Both celebrations included the Scholars cooking for the community and playing games with the local children. The two celebrations were attempts to not only bring members of the city closer to Binghamton University, but to bring neighbors closer to each other as well."
