He was the only son of T. H. Howard. The Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour shows that he served with the 30th Australian Infantry Battalion Australian Army & died of wounds in France on 29 September 1918.

There is a family photograph on his Roll of Honour with this description:

Studio portrait of 2362 Private (Pte) Albert Edward Howard, 30th Battalion, of Scone, NSW, with his family. A railway porter prior to enlistment on 29 August 1915, Pte Howard embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Orsova (A67) on 11 March 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 12 April 1917. He was killed in action on 29 September 1918 at the Battle of St Quentin Canal.

His grave is one of four such graves in the churchyard of St. Stephens in Scone.
