La cathédrale Saint-Julien est un édifice religieux situé dans la ville du Mans, dans la Sarthe. Elle est le symbole du diocèse et de l'évêché du Mans où siège l’évêque de la ville. Elle est l’un des plus grands édifices de l’époque gothique-romane de France et un cas unique dans l’Ouest. Elle est un témoignage médiéval du style architectural du gothique angevin.
L’édifice est souvent comparé aux cathédrales de Reims . Moins connue, celle du Mans a subi maintes constructions et reconstructions depuis sa fondation. Commencée vers 1060 par l’évêque Vulgrin, elle fut achevée sous sa forme actuelle vers 1430. Elle ne fut jamais véritablement finie. En effet, elle aurait dû être encore agrandie vers 1500, mais le manque de moyens fit se résigner les autorités religieuses de l’époque. Attaquée par la pollution de l'air au fil des ans, sujette au vieillissement naturel, la cathédrale Saint-Julien est un chantier quasi permanent de rénovation. Elle abrite les tombes de saint Julien et de Charles d’Anjou. Située sur la butte du Vieux-Mans, cet édifice unique possède une haute tour culminant à quelque 64 mètres d'altitude, ce qui en fait l'édifice le plus haut de toute l'agglomération mancelle. The Saint-Julien cathedral is a religious building located in the city of Le Mans, in the Sarthe. It is the symbol of the diocese and the bishopric of Le Mans where the bishop of the city sits. It is one of the largest buildings of the Gothic-Romanesque period in France and a unique case in the West. It is a medieval testimony of the architectural style of the gothic Angevin.
The building is often compared to the cathedrals of Reims. Less well known, that of Le Mans has undergone many constructions and reconstructions since its foundation. Beginning around 1060 by Bishop Vulgrin, it was completed in its present form around 1430. It was never really finished. Indeed, it should have been further enlarged around 1500, but the lack of means made resign the religious authorities of the time. Attacked by air pollution over the years, prone to natural aging, the Saint-Julien cathedral is a quasi permanent site of renovation. It houses the tombs of Saint Julien and Charles of Anjou. Located on the hill of Vieux-Mans, this unique building has a high tower culminating at about 64 meters above sea level, making it the tallest building in the whole of the Mancelle conurbation.
