John Weer established a general store in Weer,
Indian Territory, in 1889. A post office operated here, 1896-1919, with Weer as
postmaster. By 1904 the village had about a dozen businesses consisting of two
general stores, a saw mill, a grist mill, a school-church house, a cotton gin,
one or more doctors and drug stores, etc. At least four doctors practiced there
during the first two decades of the 1900s. The school was relocated to 131st
street early in the community's history. Population grew to around 100.
Bootleggers dotted the Broken Arrow Creek area. Gambling, knifings and shootings
often were reported along the creek and at parties in Weer during Indian
Territory and early statehood days.
