[FR] Située non loin de la cité de Richelieu, dans un cadre naturel et romantique, l’Abbaye Royale Saint-Michel de Bois-Aubry est un riche témoin historique du passage de l'érémitisme (oratoire très ancien dédié à Saint-Michel,auprès duquel l'ermite Robert se retira dans les dernières années du XIe sicècle ) au cénobitisme (Donation par le seigneur Brice du Chillou en 1118, le prieuré d'origine fut érigé en abbaye en 1138 / ), ainsi que de l’organisation monastique / Ordre Tironien / application de la Règle de saint Benoît de Nursie).
Après avoir connu l'abbatiat de Charles de Ronsard en 1544 (le frère du poète), l'abbaye traversa, cette fois encore, les guerres de Religion, la révolution française, les rapines qui s'ensuivirent, et les maltraitances des temps modernes...
Sur le plan architectural, l'abbaye est un riche témoin à la fois du style roman (XIIe siècle) et du style gothique (XIVe et XVe siècles), mais aussi de leurs déclinaisons puisqu'on y retrouve des éléments marquants de style roman tardif, gothique rayonnant et gothique flamboyant.
L'abbaye, dont l'appareil est en pierre de tuffeau, est célèbre pour:
- son haut clocher hors œuvre à la flèche de pierre (XIVe siècle);
- son abbatiale et son jubé ;
- son cloître (XIIe siècle), sa salle capitulaire (XIIe siècle) avec sa colonne romaine (IIIe siècle), et son Hostellerie des convers(XIIe et XVe siècles);
- ses fortifications massives (XVe siècle) ;
- sa salle à écho (XIIe et XVIe siècles).
[EN] Situated not far from the city of Richelieu, in a natural and romantic setting, the Royal Abbey of Saint-Michel de Bois-Aubry is a rich historical witness to the passage of the eremitism (very ancient oratory dedicated to Saint-Michel, The hermit Robert withdrew in the last years of the eleventh century) to cenobitism (Donation by Lord Brice du Chillou in 1118, the original priory was erected as an abbey in 1138 /), as well as the monastic organization / Order Tironien / application of the Rule of Saint Benedict of Nursie).
After having known the abbey of Charles de Ronsard in 1544 (the poet's brother), the abbey once again crossed the wars of Religion, the French Revolution, the ensuing rapines, and the maltreatments of modern times ...
Architecturally, the abbey is a rich witness both to the Romanesque style (12th century) and to the Gothic style (14th and 15th centuries), but also to their declensions, as there are striking elements of late Romanesque style , Gothic radiating and gothic flamboyant.
The abbey, whose apparatus is made of tufa stone, is famous for:
- its high bell tower with a stone spire (14th century);
- its abbey church and its rood screen;
- its cloister (12th century), its chapter house (12th century) with its Roman column (3rd century), and its Hostellerie des convers (12th and 15th centuries);
- its massive fortifications (15th century);
- its echo room (twelfth and sixteenth centuries).
