The Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele is the third largest opera house in Europe, after the opera houses in Paris and Vienna. It was designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile. Following his death in 1891, construction was continued by his son, Architect Ernesto Basile. The neoclassical style structure was opened to the public in 1897. In 1974 the theater was closed for reconstruction that were due to be finished relatively quickly; it remained closed for 23 years and was reopened on May 12 1997.

The Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele is Palermo's largest venue for performances of opera, ballet, and symphony in Palermo. It has a seating capacity of 1,387 persons.
