This lighthouse was built some 70 years after the Point of Ayre (Major) Lighthouse. Originally it was 250 yards close to the sea than the original light. In 1951 is was moved another 250 yards further away from the Major light and now stands on the beach.
The Minor Lighthouse is also known as 'The Winkie'.
The top half of the lighthouse tower is red whilst the lower half is white.
The Lighthouse was moved due to the continued build up of pebbles on the beach and the original Major lighthouse is now some way in land.
At the time of the move the height of the tower was increased as is clear form the doorway half way up the tower which has no ladder to allow access. Also on the top red part of the tower is plaque inscribed as follows:
James Dove & Coy
Contractors
Edinburgh
1889
On lower white part of the tower is a date plate for the year 1950.
Following a review in 2010 by the three General Lighthouse Authorities (GLAs) of the UK and Ireland it was agreed to discontinue this light with effect from 7 April 2010.
