The church sign indicates William Tyrrell (1807 - 1879) was a saint but that must just be a local feeling towards the man who was Lord Bishop of Newcastle & who travelled extensively throughout the countryside establishing bush churches & schools.
The Anglican Parish website states that the 1899 sandstone Anglican Church of St Columba of Iona replaced a timber structure built on the site in 1864 as a church and school. This site is not in the village and is situated on Busby’s original 940 acres on the east side of the Munmurra River.
The church has its own graveyard & is constructed of sandstone with the original roof replaced by corrugated iron. The date stone is at the rear of the building.
Cassilis' population has declined over the years & now numbers less than 100.
