He was a private with the 57th Australian Infantry Battalion 15th Infantry Brigade Australian Army during the First World War. His headstone also shows that he was the 3rd dearly loved son of J. & E. Ashford. The Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour confirms the details on his stout rectangular marble headstone which has a shroud on top & a rifle beside.
