An old mail camp building made of dry-staked stone is on display at the Ranching Heritage Center, on the campus of Texas Tech University in Lubbock TX.
An interpretive sign nearby reads as follows:
“OLD MAIL CAMP
c. 1875
this single door, stacked rock structure with the pole and brush roof was located north of an old military and stage line road in Knox County, Texas. It may have served as a rest stop or waystation for U.S. Army couriers in and out of Fort Griffin on a branch of the Mackenzie Trail. Early postal contractors used the male camp as they handle deliveries for the ranches, leaving and picking up mail at the site. Such buildings helped to connect the widely dispersed settlements on the frontier with the rest of the nation."
