This common well, reaching 33 m deep, crosses the galleries of the underground quarries of Ecorcheveau. Its name derives from the fact that it begins to "smoke" the winter as soon as its temperature approaches -2 ° C provided that the atmospheric pressure remains moderate or weak.
In the subterranean galleries the temperature ranges from 12 to 14 °, and the hot air rises with a steam which, on leaving the well, suddenly condenses into very fine droplets, Lowering temperatures.
