Carmela is a 4.5 meter high by 2 meter wide iron and cement sculpture of the head of a teenage girl created by Jaume Plensa in 2015. The sculpture is made up of five separate iron pieces stacked together. The head is bolted to a circular cement base.
In this unusual presentation the artist worked from a photograph taken in 2013. He obtained a three-dimensional image of the girl’s head, from which he created a laterally-compressed head of a hairless girl with her eyes closed. The result was an elongated and flattened head which retained and enhanced the features of the subject.
A plaque attached to the base is inscribed:
