Memorial Text:
GROVER K VARNELL
SSgt USAAF WWII
USA
Oct 8 1918 + Mar 6 1943
His tombstone says he was part of the 18th Bomber Squadron in WWII, but nothing on the web to confirm. The web records show the 18th Bomber Squadron was part of the 34th Bomber Group It did not deploy to England until April 1944. It flew both B-17 & B-24 bombers.
Any way he died in the United States somewhere. The 18th Bomb. Sq. was doing Antisubmarine flights during the time of his passing. Part of the 8th Air Force
