[FR] Pour disposer d’un siège social qui corresponde à ses besoins et à son prestige, la BNC fait appel en 1926 à l’architecte Joseph Marrast. C’est un choix avant-gardiste : le néoclassicisme Art déco que prône alors l’ « École de Paris » n’a pas encore été appliqué au secteur bancaire.
Édifié « avec tous les perfectionnements de l’industrie moderne », le nouveau bâtiment du boulevard des Italiens témoigne des possibilités du matériau moderne qu’est le béton. Les façades sont abondamment décorées de pilastres « néo-égyptiens » alors fort en vogue et les intérieurs, de stucs et marbres colorés. La légende veut qu’un orchestre soit venu spécialement de New York jouer sur le toit, lors de son inauguration…
Il est finalement inauguré par la Banque nationale pour le commerce et l’industrie (BNCI), la BNC ayant fait faillite dans l’intervalle.
[EN] In 1926 BNC commissioned the architect Joseph Marrast to build a headquarters to match its requirements and its status. This was an avant-garde choice: the neoclassical Art Deco style championed by the ‘Paris School’ at that time had not yet been applied to bank premises.
Built ‘with all the refinements of modern industry’, the new building on the boulevard des Italiens demonstrated the potential of the modern material known as reinforced concrete. The facades are abundantly decorated with ‘neo-Egyptian’ pilasters, which were then very much in vogue, and the interiors are decorated with stucco and coloured marble. Legend has it that an orchestra was specially brought over from New York to play on the roof at the inauguration…
In the end, it was however inaugurated by the Banque Nationale pour le Commerce et l’Industrie (BNCI), as BNC had in the meantime gone bankrupt.
