The Australian Standing Stones is Australia's official monument honouring all peoples of Celtic origin who contributed to the development of Australia. In the Glen Innes region people of Celtic origin migrated from 1838 to become farmers & miners.
The Official Opening is recorded on a brass plaque (lower right) attached to a boulder which sits on a high point overlooking the Stones.
It states:
The Australian Standing Stones
Officially opened by The Governor of NSW Rear Admiral Sir Peter Sinclair, A.O. on 1st February 1992 in recognition of the involvement of the Celtic races in the building of the Australian nation.
Rear Admiral Sir Peter Sinclair was an officer in the Royal Australian Navy who served as the 35th Governor of New South Wales. In his 41 year naval service he saw active service in Korea, Malaysia & Vietnam & the relief operations following Cyclone Tracey. He commanded HMAS Penguin, was Director of Naval Plans & was the first commander of the Australian Defence Force Academy. In 1987 he was appointed Flag Officer Commanding HM Australian Fleet. In 1989 he was appointed as Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff but served only briefly until his retirement later that year.
