The sign is one of many in the UK that relate to royalty. In this case it is King George II of Great Britain. He ruled between 1727 and 1760.

The picture is taken from this full length portrait that was painted in 1727 by Charles Jervas.

The pub is currently run by the owners of the small Old Spot Brewery who bought the pub in 2011 after it had been empty for a number of years.

The sign is actually on a pole at the side of Halifax Road which runs at the rear of the pub car park.
