There is a historical marker just off Highway 263, about a half mile south of Hawkinsville, a small, unincorporated community. The marker reads:

NEAR THIS SPOT IN 1851 FROGTOWN WAS FOUNDED. IT BECAME THE CENTER OF TRADE FOR THE MINERS WORKING ON THE NEARBY FLATS AND GULCHES. WHEN THE OREGON STAGE ROAD WAS MADE THE TOWN WAS MOVED TO HIGHER GROUND AND IN 1852 WAS RENAMED HAWKINSVILLE. IN 1858 A RED BRICK CHURCH WAS ERECTED IN THE CENTER OF TOWN. IT IS STILL STANDING. THIS MONUMENT DEDICATED SEPT. 8, 1977, E CLAMPUS VITUS - HUMBUG CHAPTER 73

There is very little left of Hawkinsville today except for the small, red church and a Portuguese community hall across the street from the church. In front of the church hangs a plaque that reads:

CHURCH OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
Established: 1877

In memory of the Portuguese Community

Presented by the descendents of John and Gertrude Solus

I was not able to gather much info on this church other than it is part of the Catholic Church of St. Joseph in nearby Yreka which is part of the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, CA.

I'm assuming this church erected with a different congregation until the Portuguese community took over the church in 1877.

Date the Church was built, dedicated or cornerstone laid: 01/01/1858
