V 16. století byla reformací silne narušena, jak organizace katolické církve, tak i možnost jejího pusobení. Na základe Tridentského koncilu, který položil vetší duraz na intenzivnejší duchovní správu, zacala narustat snaha upevnit úlohu farností. V prubehu 18. století se snažili habsburští panovníci vytvorit nové farnosti, protože soucasná sít byla neuspokojivá. Farnost Brezí byla zrízena v roce 1788 vydelením z farnosti Osová Bítýška a Hermanov. Její vytvorení, stavba kostela a fary byla financována z náboženského fondu.

Kostel Jména Panny Marie byl postaven roku 1788 v barokním slohu. Témer všechno vnitrní zarízení bylo prevzato ze zrušeného kapucínského kostela v Jihlave (oltáre, lavice, varhany, stríbrný kalich, patena atd.). První mši svatou zde sloužil v nedeli 28. zárí 1788 brnenský biskup Jan Baptista. 13. 6. 1869 zmenil brnenský biskup Antonín Schafgotsche pojmenování Brezí z lokální kuracie na farnost a duchovní správce používal již titul farár.

Kostel mel tri oltáre, hlavní – P. Marie a dva bocní oltáre sv. Anny a sv. Jana Nepomuckého. Bocní oltáre trpely príliš vlhkostí a musely být odstraneny. Na jejich místo byly roku 1889 v dobe pusobení velmi aktivního faráre P. Josefa Pávka z daru celé farnosti postaveny nové bocní oltáre, zasvecené P. Marie Lurdské a sv. Anne. V roce 1861 byla vystavena štíhlá vež a do ní umísteny tri nové zvony. V kostele byly provádeny velké zmeny a úpravy za P. Josefa Kodýtka, který ve Brezí pusobil v letech 1847 – 1860 a dále pak za P. Josefa Pávka, který byl ve Brezí farárem a také cestným obcanem v letech 1886–1914.

Kostel byl roku 1849 vyloupen, a proto byl postupne dovybavován a v letech 1882-1888 byly provedeny velké opravy financované prevážne dobrovolnými príspevky, kostel byl i vymalován.

V roce 1882 byl vymalován celý kostel. Pan Josef Svoboda v roce 1884 opravil hlavní oltár. Byla opravena kazatelna a kur. V roce 1883-1885 byla pro farnost porízena zcela nová mešní roucha a kostelní prádlo. V roce 1894 byl nákladem farníku porízen hlavní oltár, príspevek poslali také bývalí farníci z Ameriky ve výši 160,-- Kc, pricemž náklady na vybudování oltáre byly 2 212,-- Kc. V roce 1896 byla v prezbitári zbudována nová mozaiková dlažba a Boží hrob. Byly opraveny i posvátné nádoby a jiné, hlavne nákladem brat. živ. ružence. Strecha kostela byla v té dobe pokryta novou bridlicovou krytinou a byla zhotovena nová okna v celkovém nákladu 6 000,-- Kc. K tomu ješte darem paní Finkové z Vídne, která byla rodacka ze Brezí byla zhotovena figurální okna v cene 3 000,-- Kc. Tato okna zhotovila firma Geiling. Po všech úpravách ve Brezí provedených konsekroval 9. a 10. ríjna 1909 p. biskup Pavel, hrabe Huyn kostel a hlavní oltár. V roce 1911 se konaly ve Brezí poprvé od založení kostela sv. misie, další misie 1926, 1933, 1950, 2001. Z novodobých oprav byla v letech 1970-1971 zhotovena celá venkovní fasáda kostela, šlo o zhotovení celé venkovní fasády kostela, 1977 porízení nových lavic, v roce 1983 renovování elektroinstalace v kostele, porízení akumulacních kamen a vymalování vnitrku kostela. V roce 1986 byly odstraneny staré chátrající oltáre a postaveny nové oltáre podle návrhu umelkyne Bedrišky Znojemské. Byla zhotovena nová dlažba. V roce 1987 byla na strechu položena medená krytina a kostel byl vybaven novou krížovou cestou. Další úpravy probehly po roce 1989 prevážne tím, že byla opravena venkovní fasáda kostela.

V letech 2006-2007 probíhá oprava kostela.
