There is no obvious reason for such a picture, but I suspect the dog belongs to the landlord of the pub.

The sign was erected sometime after 2010 because this picture of the pub taken on FLICKR has a pub sign with two customers having a drink in the pub.

Unusually the pub sign has the telephone number of the pub as well.

The sign was painted by Catherine Bartle a local self taught painter who retired in order to become a professional painter. link
