Manjimup was named after the Aboriginal words "Manjin" (a broad-leafed edible reed) and "up" (meeting place, or place of). The area was first settled in 1856 and was declared a town in 1910. Manjimup has a population of around 5,000 and is the regional centre for the Warren and Blackwood Valleys, providing all facilities including an airport. Once dependent on timber the town now is home of the famous black truffles as well as apple, stone fruit, cherry and avocado orchards.
The Shire offices on the corner of Rose and Brockman Sts is a modern (1961) building of rendered brick with a corrugated steel roof and features a wall of local stone next to the main entrance
