[EN] This source located at the place called "Mocrate" has existed since the transformation of our planet. This place served, of course, in prehistory, drinking water, indispensable to life. Then came the digging of the wells in the tuffeau in order to reach the underground aquifers.
Around 1850, this spring became a fairly large nonagonal washbowl fountain (with 9 sides) with framework and roof. People came to wash their clothes and especially to rinse them. The washerwomen went up the side to 10% with the wet linen. They had much merit.
Since 1958, with the appearance of tap water, this wash-house fountain had been abandoned, hence the initiative of the municipal council to undertake the safeguarding of this place where our ancestors exchanged their joys and sorrows in the hard Labor of that time.
This rehabilitation was carried out with the help of the Association for the Safeguarding and the Embellishment of the Gelinian Heritage, thanks to material and human resources based on the voluntary work.
This initiative has made this place a once again a place to live and relax.
[FR] Cette source située au lieu-dit « Mocrate » existe depuis la transformation de notre planète. Ce lieu servait bien sûr, dans la préhistoire, d’eau potable, indispensable à la vie. Ensuite est venu le creusement des puits dans le tuffeau afin d’atteindre les nappes souterraines.
Vers 1850, cette source est devenue une fontaine lavoir de taille assez importante nonagonale (à 9 côtés) avec charpente et toiture. Les gens venaient y laver leur linge et surtout le rincer. Les lavandières remontaient la côté à 10 % avec le linge mouillé. Elles avaient bien du mérite.
Depuis 1958, avec l’apparition de l’eau au robinet, cette fontaine lavoir avait été délaissée d’où l’initiative du conseil municipal d’entreprendre la sauvegarde de ce lieu où nos ancêtres ont échangé leurs joies et leurs peines dans le dur labeur de cette époque.
Cette remise en état a été effectuée avec l’aide de l’Association pour la Sauvegarde et l’Embellissement du Patrimoine Gélinois, grâce à des moyens matériels et humains basés sur le bénévolat.
Cette initiative a permis à ce lieu de redevenir un endroit où il fera bon vivre et se prélasser.
