The trail is named Three-In-One because it goes through pinelands, a hardwood hammock, and near the glades. (The sign incorrectly states that the trail goes through the glade, but the loop trail does not; a side trail off of the loop trail does.)

In the Everglades, elevation changes of just a few inches have a strong effect on the ecosystems thereon. Glades are the low elevation, with water running through them during the wet season, but usually dry in the dry season. Two or 3 inches higher brings you into the pinelands, which also contain palmettoes and other trees that like this just-above-water habitat. Go up a couple of more inches (did your ears pop?) and you get into the hardwood hammock with dense foliage.

In both the pinelands and hammock a fun activity is to look up for tree snails. Folks not used to doing so will wonder what I'm talking about. But after finding a few, and then a few more, and so on, one becomes more adept at spotting these elusive and beautiful creatures. Take the challenge and look for them on your hike, paying close attention to smooth-barked trees, since snails do not like pines and other rough-bark trees.
