They are also called hummocks, but the NPS calls them hammocks. They are tree islands in the glades. In the everglades, elevation changes of mere inches makes completely different ecosystems. The hardwood hammocks are just inches higher than the glades that surround them. This hammock has the largest mahogany tree in the US proper (not including holdings). Enjoy your walk here.
