This is one of two campgrounds at Everglades National Park. This poster has been staying there every so-many years since 1970. There are no hookups, but just recently (2017, in fact) three shower buildings were added to this kidney-shaped campground, after eliminating 4 or 5 of the numbered camping sites to put in the buildings. Prior to that, you only had the small bathroom buildings, which still exist, since the showers do not double as bathrooms.
The other campground, at the far end of the park (Flamingo) has had shower buildings for years. Ocean lovers may want to stay at that campground, but you may have to wear a bug suit all day, since the mosquitoes are fierce there all day, even in the wind.
But Long Pine Key is a cooler, shadier ('twas even more so before Hurricane Andrew) and more peaceful campground. In the Everglades, an elevation change of just inches makes a remarkable change in the environment. This key being just a few inches higher than the surrounding glades allows for Florida slash pine to thrive here. Besides camping, there is a pond here (no fishing or swimming), and a separate picnic area that can be used by folks that are not camping (separate entrance).
Many sites are pull through, but most are just back-in. While tenting is allowed at any site in the campground, RVs must stay in all but the last (west-most) lanes. The showers are sure a big help!
