Die Bavaria (der latinisierte Ausdruck für Bayern) ist die weibliche Symbolgestalt und weltliche Patronin Bayerns. Sie wurde im Auftrag von König Ludwig I. (1786–1868) in den Jahren 1843 bis 1850 errichtet und steht in baulicher Einheit mit der Ruhmeshalle am Rande der Hangkante oberhalb der Theresienwiese.
Nach den barocken Kolossalstatuen des 17. Jahrhunderts ist sie das erste Beispiel ihrer Art aus dem 19. Jahrhundert und seit der Antike die erste Kolossalstatue, die gänzlich aus gegossener Bronze besteht.
Das 18,52 Meter hohe und ca. 87,36 Tonnen schwere Standbild der Bavaria wurde im Bronzehohlguss hergestellt und besteht aus vier Teilgüssen (Kopf, Brust, Hüfte, untere Hälfte und Löwe) und diversen montierten Kleinteilen. Die Höhe des Steinsockels beträgt 8,92 Meter. Sie war und ist eine technische Meisterleistung.
Als eines der Wahrzeichen Münchens ist sie ein beliebtes Fotomotiv und ein Treffpunkt für Touristen und Münchner - vor allem zum Oktoberfest. Wer mag, kann auch einen Blick in das Innenleben der Statue werfen. Über eine Wendeltreppe geht es bis in den Kopf der Bavaria, von wo man einen einmaligen Blick auf die Theresienwiese und die angrenzenden Stadtviertel hat.

The Bavaria (the latinized expression for Bavaria) is the feminine symbolic form and secular patroness of Bavaria. It was erected on the order of King Ludwig I (1786-1868) between 1843 and 1850, and stands in structural unity with the Hall of Fame on the edge of the slope above the Theresienwiese.
After the baroque colossal statues of the 17th century it is the first example of its kind from the 19th century and since ancient times the first colossal statue, made entirely of cast bronze.
The 18.52 meter high and approximately 87.36 tonnes heavy statue of the Bavaria was made in the bronze hollow casting and consists of four partial casts (head, chest, hip, lower half and lion) and various mounted small parts. The height of the stone base is 8.92 meters. It was and is a technical masterpiece.
As one of Munich's landmarks, it is a popular photo-motive and a meeting place for tourists and Munich-especially at Oktoberfest. Who likes, can also take a look into the inner life of the statue. A spiral staircase leads to the head of the Bavaria, from where you have a unique view of the Theresienwiese and the surrounding city quarter.
