The Station was established in 1896 by the RNLI in view of the number of shipwrecks in the area.

The station operates both a Trent Class all-weather Lifeboat ("Gough Ritchie II") and a D class inshore Lifeboat ("Spirit of Leicester").

The current Lifeboat, Gough Ritchie II, came on station at the end of May 1998.

The current inshore lifeboat came on station on 18 October 2010 and has the operational number D742.
