The Teatro Massimo is the third largest opera house in Europe, after the opera houses in Paris and Vienna. It was designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile. Following his death in 1891, construction was continued by his son, Architect Ernesto Basile. The neoclassical style structure was opened to the public in 1897. The opera house has a capacity of 1,387 persons.
The stamp was issued by Italy in 1987 as part of a set of four stamps depicting various piazzas.
