Lower Cape Baptist was established in 1825, the first building being the Calkins Meeting House, built at that time. Stretching out behind the church is Mountain View Cemetery, originally known as Calkins Cemetery. It predates that original meeting house by at least 15 years. In the cemetery are just over 450 headstones, many for multiple persons. The name, Calkins Cemetery, comes from the Calkin family, on whose land, presumably, the cemetery was established as a family cemetery.
Immediately east of the Lower Cape Baptist Church, this is the headstone of the Reverend E.F. Foshay and his wife Asenath A. Foshay. Possibly the only zinc headstone in the cemetery, it is quite tall and slender, with an extended cornice atop the shaft and an urn atop. Drapery hangs all around the shaft above the inscription plates. The stepped base has the name"
FOSHAY" above and rustication below. The Reverend was quite likely one of the no less than 52 ministers who served the church to the present.
