The stone is located on Harley Thorn Lane car park at Hanchurch Hills.
Hanchurch Woods are situated on top of a hill on the outskirts of Newcastle-under-Lyme. It is a large, undulating wooded area has a wide network of paths that are popular with both walkers and mountain bikers and plenty of space to relax and enjoy nature too.
The woods are managed as a public open space by Staffordshire County Council. They were gifted to the council by the then Lord Stafford in 1960.
At the entrance to the car park is a boulder with the inscription:-

The Right Honourable Lord Stafford
George Horatio Nelson was born on 26th October 1887 in London. He died on 16th July 1962 (aged 74) in Stafford. He was an Electrical engineer and Chairman of English Electric.
In the 1943 New Year Honours he was appointed a knight for services to Ministry of Aircraft Production and Ministry of Supply. He was created a baronet, of Hilcote Hall in the County of Stafford, in 1955, before being raised to the peerage on 20 January 1960 as Baron Nelson of Stafford, of Hilcote Hall in the County of Stafford.
