The Poyll Dooey (black pool) was the Ramsey's tip up until the late 80’s.

In early 1988 plans were drawn up to landscape the site and work commenced that summer in levelling and removing some of the more objectionable items of rubbish.

Work continued over the next 10 years in planting trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials. The landscaping was continually tweaked in order to provide the area as it can now be seen.

Plantings and landscaping have been carried out to produce a particular sustainable and viable habitat in order to increase bio-diversity throughout the site.

The Nature Trails are made up of a patchwork of tall grassland, short grass meadow and small copses of a variety of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs. Patches of nettles provide food plants for the caterpillars of butterflies and in places thick undergrowth provides both food and shelter.

The paths between the areas also form a habitat which is useful for birds such as the song thrush seeking worms and snails. Wildflowers abound in the meadow areas and attract a host of insects. Skylarks and meadow pipits may be seen in these areas mainly during spring and summer.
