"La synagogue de Besançon, plus rarement dénommée temple israélite de Besançon, est le principal lieu de culte juif de la ville de Besançon (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté), situé au 27, quai de Strasbourg, dans le quartier de Battant. Elle succède à une ancienne synagogue devenue trop vétuste et surtout trop étroite pour accueillir l'ensemble de la communauté, qui était en pleine croissance dans les années 1860. La construction dure de 1869 à 1871, dirigée par l'architecte franc-comtois Pierre Marnotte qui fait naître un chef-d’œuvre de style mauresque. Elle est le principal site de réunion des Juifs de la ville. Malgré de lourdes menaces durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et l'occupation allemande, le bâtiment n'a connu aucun changement significatif quant à son affectation et son architecture.

Le plan, les décors et le mobilier font de cet édifice l'un des plus originaux de la ville. Outre son style atypique, on note la présence remarquable de minarets, de vitraux, d'une sculpture des tables de la Loi, d'un orgue, ainsi que d'une arche sainte (ou heikhal), particuliers dans leur raffinement ou leur réalisation.
