Interestingly, there is a walking tour guide available at the visitors center for this cemetery. Land for the cemetery was purchased from Bowdoin College in 1821. Two additional tracts were also obtained in 1886 and in 1973. As a condition of each sale, Bowdoin College was deeded a row of plots to allocate as they wished. Traditionally, they were assigned to individuals and families who had given distinguished service to the College. There are several famous people interred here including Joshua Chamberlain: Civil War Union Brigadier General, Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient and Governor of Maine. On the Pine Street side of the cemetery is a receiving tomb used to store bodies in the winter. Once the ground softened in the spring those individuals received a proper burial.
Buried around this very large zinc headstone are members of the extended Martin Family. It appears that the patriarch was Clement Martin and that three or four of his sons and the wives of some of the sons, as well as Clement, are buried here. The family headstone is huge, the largest we've yet encountered, It is in the form of a Greek temple with Doric and Ionic columns on all sides and a pediment above each inscription plate.
