Church Hill Cemetery is on a rise at the shore of Machias Bay, a very picturesque and pastoral location for a cemetery. As well as the zinc grave markers there are quite a number of veterans' gravesites. We were there around the Fourth of July and it was nice to see all the American Flags on the veterans' graves.
The Laura Higgins headstone is at the rear of the cemetery, directly south from the church. It takes the form of a small obelisk about 4 feet in height with a multi-stepped base and arched openings for the inscription plates. Beneath the Laura J. Higgins plate, in the headstone itself, is embossed the name of Alfred Higgins, likely her husband. However, there is no plate in the headstone for Alfred.
