The village of Saltaire was built as a model village for the workers of a large textile mile erected by Sir Titus Salt.
AS well as building houses for the workers he also built facilities for the workers such as a school, a hospital, public paths and a church.
This park was also laid out in 1871 to provide leisure for the facilities at the weekend and included bandstand, cricket pitch, croquet lawn, and a boathouse amongst other facilities.
The park was donated it to the City of Bradford in 1920 by James Roberts, the then manager of the mill. Bradford still maintain the park.
There was an entrance at the eastern end of the park, but access from Saltaire was by a road bridge across the park at this location, but it became unsafe and was demolished in 1967.
This new cast iron truss foot bridge was built to replace the original road bridge.
