During the battle for Malta during World War II, than 14,000 bombs were dropped on Malta, about 30,000 buildings were destroyed, and more than 1,500 civilians were killed; but Malta never fell to Axis forces.
A marble plaque installed in the Upper Barrakka Gardens honors the American servicemen who helped defend Malta. It contains an image of the current American flag and the United States World War II Victory medal. Below is the following inscription:
