Located at the west portion of Greenhorn Park and next to a parking lot is a stone monument containing a plaque that reads:
NEAR THIS SPOT IN MARCH OF 1851 A REAL "GREEHORN" ENGLISHMAN TRAVELING THROUGH THE COUNTRY INQUIRED AT THE BEAN-MC CONNELL DIGGINGS WHERE HE MIGHT ACQUIRE A GOLD MINE. MR. BEAN AS A JOKE SENT HIM TO THE MOST UNLIKELY SPOT UP THE HILL AND TOLD HIM TO DIG UNDER AN OAK TREE. NO ONE DREAMED HE COULD STRIKE IT RICH AND THE JOKE GOT FUNNIER AND FUNNIER UNTIL THEY FOUND OUT HE WAS QUIETLY WORKING THE RICHEST GROUND ALONG THE CREEK. TO PERPETUATE THE JOKE ON THEMSELVES THE MINERS BAPTIZED THE CREEK "GREENHORN".DEDICATED APRIL 29, 1978 THE HUMBUG CHAPTER #73 E CLAMPUS VITUS |
Greenhorn Park was a bicentennial project and dedicated to the city of Yreka in 1976 and named after nearby Greenhorn Creek (originally named Race Creek) in honor of this funny bit of history.
