This function centre started off as the "Wood's Chambers", and was designed by the Newcastle architect, Frederick Burnhardt Menkens, in 1892. It was built for Joseph Wood, for "superior office accommodation and wine auction premises". Outside, it has fine brickwork, and "breathtakingly carved sandstone baroque facade". And the inside was not scrimped on, with hand carved timber, ornate plaster work, and stained glass windows.
In the early 1900's it was purchased by the Longworth family, who used it as an art gallery, library, and also as a musical recital wall, as it had great acoustics from sound deadening floor boards.
While William Longworth donated the building to the Australasian Society of Patriots in 1928, their membership dwindled, even after the Second World War, and was subsequently sold to the "Air Force Club" in 1947.
Disrepair followed, until 1999 when Paul McCloskey commenced renovations.
It was re-opened as "Longworth House" function centre in September 2009.
