In Topsfield, off U.S. Route 1, is the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, one of many sanctuaries run by Massachusetts Audubon.
To get to the sanctuary, from U.S. Route 1, turn east onto Mass. Route 97, then turn left onto Perkins Row. Follow the signs from there.
At the end of the driveway is a parking lot. From there, there are a few buildings, including the visitor center, where you pay a modest fee. Maps are available there.
Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary is a 2000+ acre preserve that covers woodlands, wetlands, and several man-made structures. The most interesting feature is the Rockaria where large stones have been arranged such that you feel like you are walking through a maze. Near the Rockaria, is one set of boardwalks around the Rockaria Pond. There are a few bridges over wider passees. Otherwise, it is a a boardwalk with no railings. Another extensive boardwalk is just off Averill's Island. There is also a stone bridge elsewhere.
