History: In 1945 Dr Roland Pope, an 'eye surgeon', promised Newcastle city council his collection of Australian paintings (on his death), with the proviso that there would be an Art Gallery built to house them.
From the Newcastle Art Gallery webpage (history section): (
visit link) this Gallery was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Friday, 11 March 1977. "Proudly, Newcastle Art Gallery is Australia's first purpose built regional Gallery. Applauded as a model for medium-sized galleries, it has an innovative floor plan and hanging system. Further, the building is also an important example of early 1970s architecture with its geometric forms and brutalist aesthetic. Newcastle City Council's architect Brian Pile was the innovate designer of the present-day brutalist building."
The Gallery is beside the "Newcastle War Memorial Cultural Centre", that now houses the Newcastle Library.
While generally admission is FREE, some special exhibitions and events may incur a charge.
This is a two-storey Gallery, but there is a lift for wheelchair access to the upper level.
"Photography is permitted in the Gallery, so long as it is for personal use. We do not permit the usage of tripods or flash photography."
