Cette usine de traitement de soies de porcs et de crins est fondée vers 1847 par Charles Brelay, marchand de crins en gros à Bordeaux, après l’achat en 1839 du domaine de Beaulieu sur lequel est édifiée l’usine. Un arrêté préfectoral daté du 24 mai 1854 l’autorise à utiliser une chaudière et une machine à vapeur pour faire mouvoir les métiers et mécanismes divers, à la condition de construire une cheminée d’au moins 20 m de haut. Cette cheminée est l’unique vestige de cet établissement, qui semble avoir cessé de fonctionner vers 1900, après avoir été reprise, au décès de son propriétaire en 1857, par Jean Savin, puis par Ernest Giraudeau. En 1855, M. Brelay présente ses produits lors de l’Exposition universelle à Paris.

La cheminée cylindrique, en petits moellons de calcaire, mesure environ 25 m de haut. La mise en oeuvre rappelle celle des piles cylindriques des hangars de la région. Le fût s’élève au-dessus d’une base parallépipédique de 1,50 m de côté et de 3,50 m de haut couronnée d’une corniche en doucine. La partie supérieure de la cheminée est formée de deux pierres taillées formant une large corniche surmontées d’une superposition de deux pierres arrondies constituant le sommet de l’édifice.


This factory for the treatment of pig and horsehair bristles was founded around 1847 by Charles Brelay, wholesaler in Bordeaux, after the purchase in 1839 of the estate of Beaulieu on which the factory is built. A prefectural decree dated May 24, 1854 authorizes it to use a boiler and a steam engine to move the various trades and mechanisms, provided that a chimney of at least 20 m high is built. This chimney is the only vestige of this establishment, which seems to have stopped working around 1900, after being taken over, on the death of its owner in 1857, by Jean Savin, then by Ernest Giraudeau. In 1855, Mr. Brelay presented his products at the Exposition Universelle in Paris.

The cylindrical chimney, in small limestone stones, is about 25 m high. The implementation resembles that of the cylindrical piles of the hangars of the region. The barrel rises above a parallepipedal base of 1.50 m side and 3.50 m high crowned with a cornice in doucine. The upper part of the chimney is made of two hewn stones forming a large cornice surmounted by a superimposition of two rounded stones constituting the top of the edifice.
