"The Lagan Weir impounds river water within the centre of Belfast, thus ensuring a minimum level, which covers the mud flats at every stage of the tide. In the event of a dangerously high tide, the weir also acts as a tidal barrage and can be used to protect the city from flooding.

The weir was constructed in the early 1990s, and this project saw a major refurbishment of the weir gates and their operating controls. In order to refurbish the gates, 6 tonne stop logs had to be lifted into place, requiring major craneage to reach into the middle of the River Lagan."
