Historic Fort Stockton, a frontier military outpost established in 1859 and abandoned in 1886, is now restored as a museum and historical attraction in Fort Stockton.
When the WPA writers were here, most of the fort's buildings were either in ruins or in private hands. In 2016, many ruins of buildings have been restored, and two of the three remaining officer's quarters have been purchased by Historic Fort Stockton and refurbished into exhibits.
From Texas: A Guide to the Lone Star State:
"Here are the RUINS OF OLD FORT STOCKTON, including the stone guard-house and three units of officers' [page 642] quarters; the latter, just outside the park area, are used as private residences. These buildings were constructed of adobe bricks and huge blocks of hewn limestone."
